“I don’t think you can ever play the odds and hope to win with the tabloid media. The tabloids can fall in love with you, and then they fall out of love. It can only backfire on you and make it that much harder for you to do your job. I’ve always tried to fly under the media radar, not to get into any sort of bargaining situation, because it affects the way you can do your job.”

“The good thing about being in college was that people took little interest in me because they were so preoccupied with their own ambitions and exams. Also there’s that thing in academia where movie-making isn’t supposed to be that important, it’s sort of low-brow. So that was refreshing to me and I was determined to be taken seriously.”

You wrote and directed recently yourself. What was that experience like? Did it give you a thirst to do more?
JS: Yes, I did a short film. It was terrific and I had such a good time. It was also an eye-opening experience. I loved being on set and constantly working and constantly having to be attentive, whereas when you’re acting you have a lot of down time.”
